For my 4th year Scholarship and Special Interest Program project at medical school, I led a translational research project with the support of my mentors Professor Mahmoud Loubani and Mr Azar Hussain.
The project, titled ‘the impact of antiarrhythmics on human pulmonary arteries: in vitro characterisation’, aimed to evaluate the effects of antiarrhythmic drugs on human pulmonary arteries to qualify their safety profile in patients with pulmonary hypertension and concomitant post-operative arrhythmias.
After over a year of data collection in Castle Hill Hospital, we were able to submit a completed abstract and manuscript to the European Association of Cardiothoracic Surgery and were accepted for an oral presentation at their 35th annual meeting in Barcelona, Spain.
Thanks to the support of the Hull Medical Society Bursary I was able to successfully travel to Barcelona and present our work at an international conference.
Moreover, I was able to gain a broader understanding of academic work taking place all over the world, network with renowned surgeons from various backgrounds and represent my medical school at a prestigious professional society.
